Michigan state representatives have an idea for helping bars and restaurants shuttered by COVID-19 — outdoor drinking districts.
House Bill 5781, proposed by Michael Webber, R-Rochester Hills, would allow local governments to designate “social districts” – areas where people could buy drinks and carry them outside. Customers would have to keep their drinks within the designated social district.
The goal is to boost spending at establishments that, once reopened, may be forced to limit their capacity due to COVID-19.
The bill has been sent to the House Regulatory Reform Committee for review.
