State health officials reported 14 new deaths from COVID-19 Wednesday, pushing the statewide total to 6,509 deaths from the virus since the pandemic began in March.
That means that about 6.2% of confirmed cases in Michigan have resulted in death.
The majority of those deaths – 69.5% of them – have been of people 70 years old or older. Most of them also had other health issues.
An outsize portion of the deaths have been among Black people. African Americans experienced 1,662 deaths per million people, while white people – the next highest number – experience just 435 deaths per million people.
State officials also reported 524 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. That brings the seven day moving average to 644 new cases per day.
Kalamazoo County health officials reported four new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, and seven on Tuesday.
