Six months after the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, medical workers are still scrambling to find enough personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep them and their patients safe.
A survey by the American Nurses Association showed that more than half of nurses nationwide have to reuse PPE on a regular basis. This is despite the fact that the medical system has had half-a-year to get supplies and funding up to adequate levels.
“Re-use and decontamination of single-use personal protective equipment as the ‘new normal’ is unacceptable, given the lack of standards and evidence of safety,” ANA President Ernest Grant said in a statement.
The ANA is calling on President Donald Trump to use the Defense Production Act to compell factories to produce enough PPE to meet demand.
