Portage closes elementary school due to COVID outbreak

Twelfth Street Elementary has halted in-person classes until November 17 after three people tested positive for the coronavirus.

Portage Public Schools has shut down its Twelfth Street Elementary after three people tested positive for COVID-19 and a further 54 people were forced to quarantine due to contact with an infected person.

Students at the school have shifted to online classes until November 17.

PPS superintendent Mark Bielang informed parents about the closure via email on Wednesday.

“While we have successfully put a number of safety practices in place, we feel this move is needed to reduce the possibility of further spread,” he said. “Based on the best information we have there is little to no risk to staff outside of Twelfth Street Elementary.”
