Michigan is on track to reopen parts of its economy shuttered by state COVID orders since November 18. That’s according to Governor Gretchen Whitmer during a press conference on Tuesday.
The governor did not announce any new COVID restrictions, nor did she announce a loosening of current restrictions as she did last week.
On December 21, Whitmer declared that schools and some businesses could reopen with limitation, but not restaurants. Those rules are set to expire on January 15 unless the state health department extends them.
Whitmer pointed to new COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and positivity measurements that suggest Michigan is on the downswing of a surge of infections that peaked shortly before Thanksgiving.
“Because so many Michiganders have done their part, our numbers are better than all of our Midwestern neighbors,” she said. “[Numbers] have been moving in the right direction. If that continues to be the case, then certainly we would feel that there was lower risk in terms of reengaging other sectors of our economy.”
