Free food and prizes … and vaccines

A vaccination clinic in Kalamazoo’s Eastside seeks to incentivize inoculations with gifts.

The flyer for the vaccination clinic looks as much like an ad for a block party as it does for a vital medical event. And that’s the point.

The vaccine drive, planned for Friday afternoon at an Eastside party store, hopes to get people their shots by tempting them with a festive atmosphere, as well as food and prizes.

The clinic is being run by the Family Health Center and hosted by the group Mothers of Hope. Besides food and music, it promises a free bottle of laundry detergent and a prepaid laundry card for everyone who pre-registers.

“This effort is designed to address the health disparities of people in the neighborhood which have been more exasperated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” reads a news release.

While they want people to set up appointments ahead of time, the organizers are expecting walk-ups as well.
