Kalamazoo halts jury trials until August

9th Circuit Court says in-person jury trials are just too dangerous during spring surge of COVID.

Kalamazoo County’s 9th Circuit Court and Probate Court have decided to hold off on all jury trials for most of the summer. The move comes after weeks of soaring COVID-19 infection rates throughout the county.

Trials had already been on hold in all of the county’s courts stemming from high infection rates throughout the winter.

Those holds had been set to expire May 31. The county’s 8th District Court hasn’t said if it intends to extend its pause as well.

Holding jury trials has been difficult over the course of the pandemic. While safety measures such as masking and social distancing have been in place, court officials felt the risk was too high to continue.
