Health care leaders in Michigan are united: People need to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and they need to get vaccinated now.
That’s the message of an open letter published Wednesday. The letter is signed by the head physicians and nurses from 21 of Michigan’s health care systems including Bronson Healthcare and Ascension Health, the owner of Borgess Hospital.
“Our healthcare workers who have been on the front lines of this pandemic for 18 months are disheartened and frustrated to see so many unvaccinated individuals admitted to our hospitals and dying from serious complications of COVID-19 infection,” reads the letter.
The letter states that 99% of those dying from the coronavirus are unvaccinated.
“This is a preventable tragedy.”
In Michigan, the rate of COVID-19 infections has been rising for most of the summer. The majority of those infected are people who have not been vaccinated, which includes people who have contracted the virus previously.
The health professionals are especially concerned about a potential fourth wave of the pandemic as children throughout the state return to indoor classrooms.
